Why are bicyclist deaths increasing?

On Behalf of | Feb 22, 2022 | Personal Injury

Riding a bicycle is a great way to get around and get in your much-needed exercise. Unfortunately, many more cyclists in Maryland and other areas have been killed in recent years.

When are bicycle accidents more likely to occur?

Bicycle accidents are more likely to happen during the summer months when the weather is warm and pleasant. More accidents occur in June through September.

What are some statistics on fatal bicycle accidents?

In 2020, there were 675 accidents resulting in cyclist fatalities. While that’s a lower number than 2019’s cyclist fatalities, it’s still too high. Over the past decade, bicycle accidents have increased by 37%. Most fatal bike accidents occur as a result of a hit and run by drivers of motor vehicles.

There is also a much higher risk of cyclists being killed when the vehicle that strikes them is an SUV or pickup truck. This is due to the much larger size of those vehicles.

Although there are many safety measures put into place to keep people who ride bicycles safer, accidents still happen. Advocates recognize that cyclists are still often in danger even when they stay in bike lanes and diligently follow the rules of the road. They continue to push for more change and better conditions.

Distracted driving accounts for one of the biggest reasons behind fatal bicycle accidents. Unfortunately, these accidents often occur even when there are designated bike lanes for cyclists. Cars and other larger vehicles veer into the bike lane, which can cause a collision with bicycles.

In many cases of accidents involving bicycles and cars, the driver might be looking out for other cars and trucks. Sadly, they often overlook cyclists, which increases the risk of a catastrophic bicycle accident.

Bicycle accidents can result in serious, disabling injuries. If you or a loved one has been a victim, hold the at-fault party responsible.
